The history of the United Institute of Informatics Problems started on 1965 when on the base of some laboratories of the Institute of Mathematics and Computers of the Belarusian Academy of Sciences the Institute of Engineering Cybernetics (IEC) was founded. The first director of IEC from 1965 till 1970 was Corresponding member of Belarusian Academy of Sciences Georgiy.K.Goranski.
For more than 35 years the IEC made a significant contribution into the development of fundamental and applied research in the field of computer aided design (CAD) systems, image processing, intelligent processes modeling.
The first period the IEC was carrying out the basic theoretical research in CAD for engineering and creation of CAD systems for industrial enterprises. The research covered the entire area of automation problems, including:
- Computer aided design of machines, products, gears, etc.;
- Computer aided design of engineering preparation of the manufacturing, including design of equipment, tools, presses, etc.;
- creation of control programs for flexible automated manufacture;
- computer aided design of control schemes and investigation of the problem of machines fast testing.
The IEC had been dynamically developed, and in 1975 it already had about 600 specialists. A lot of industrial enterprises have been using CAD systems created at the IEC for discrete technological processes, technological equipment, control schemes, machine-building, press, metal work tools design. The first samples of computer-aided design, computer graphics, production scheduling and control systems were created. The manufacturing drawing automates and graphic information input devices for computers were produced.
Since the middle of 70th the IEC initiated the works in new scientific direction: automation of cartographic production, remote sensing image processing, solution of some special problems concerning the cartographic information processing. The essential scientific results were obtained in this field by the IEC specialists. The modern geoinformation systems were designed for cartographic enterprises and were useful for the solution of ecological problems. In 1985 the IEC had already more than 1300 specialists.
The third stage of the IEC history dated as the middle of 80th. It was connected with the essential expansion of fundamental research of the general problems of intelligent processes modeling, with development of new information technologies. The IEC carried out research in the field of speech recognition and synthesis, systems identification, artificial intelligence, parallel architectures and neurocomputing, self-organizing systems, theory of decision making and optimization. The areas of special interest were the research in the fields of discrete mathematics, mathematical logic, logic design, scheduling theory, methods of image and speech processing. Many systems were implemented in the industrial enterprises of Belarus and other republics of Soviet Union. Within the period from 1970 till 1987 the Institute was directed by Dr Oleg I.Simenkov.
In the beginning of 90th, the Institute was appointed as a main body responsible for information technology policy in the country. There were new possibilities for joint research projects with foreign partners and national commercial enterprises The successful activity allows the IEC to be one of the most promoted scientific centers in Belarus.
The political and economic changes in mid 90th made the funding of science reduced. It was the period when the staff of the IEC was about 600 researchers.
To make the work in new conditions more efficient in 1996 the Scientific Research Association (SRA) "Cybernetics" was organized on the basis of the Institute. There were four engineering enterprises of the Association: "Information Technologies", "Geoinformation Systems", "Automation Systems" and "Scientific Device-Building". The Institute of Engineering Cybernetics was the scientific center of the Association. Fifteen years from 1987 till 2002 the Academician of Belarussian Academy of Sciences professor Viatcheslav S.Tanaev was the director of the institute.
In 2002 three enterprises of the Association became independent research organizations and the structure of the Association was reorganized. On the basis of the IEC, SRA "Cybernetics" and enterprise "Automation Systems" new United Institute of Informatics Problems was formed.
The first director and founder of the Institute (1965—1970) was academician G. K. Goranskiy.
The directors of the institute were also:
Oleg I.SEMENKOV (1970—1987),
Viacheslav S. TANAEV (1987—2002),
Sergey V.ABLAMEYKO (2002—2008).
Starting from 2008 the Institute is headed by Alexander V. TUZIKOV.
