Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever with nearly ˆ80 billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020) – in addition to the private investment that this money will attract. It promises more breakthroughs, discoveries and world-firsts by taking great ideas from the lab to the market. Two year work programmes announce the specific areas that will be funded by Horizon 2020. Find them on the online Participant Portal as they can be used as a calendar for the calls for proposals (‘calls’), to be published during the year. The Participant Portal is an entry point for electronic administration of EU-funded research and innovation projects, and hosts the services for managing your proposals and projects throughout their lifecycle.
Since Horizon 2020 is supported by European Commission all directions under three pillars correspond to certain Directorates General (DG’s). Space belong to DG “Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (GROW)“.
Within Horizon 2020, EU space research has been identified as one of Europe’s ‘key industrial technologies’. The programme will enable the European space research community to develop innovative space technologies and operational concepts 'from idea to demonstration in space'. This will anchor and structure space research at European level and address key issues central to EU space industrial policy.

HORIZON 2020 WILL FUND SPACE RESEARCH IN A VARIETY OF AREAS INCLUDING:
Satellite navigation applications and satellite navigation research and technology development
Satellite navigation applications projects aim to strengthen the European Global Navigation Satellite System (EGNSS) market, while satellite navigation research and technology projects support the development of enabling technologies for the EU’s Galileo and EGNOS systems.
Earth observation Earth observation projects aim to widen the exploitation of European Earth observation satellite data and to stimulate the wider use of Copernicus Sentinel data.
Protection of European assets in space Work in this area includes research on space debris, space weather, Near Earth Objects (NEOs), and Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST). Horizon 2020 will also back the framework for SST Support which aims at pooling existing national SST assets at European level. Once these assets are combined, Horizon 2020 will work on upgrading and developing additional SST assets such as radars and telescopes to ensure a high level of performance in the long term.
Competitiveness in the European space sector To improve the competitiveness of the European space sector, Horizon 2020 focuses on:
Space technology projects that aim at enhancing the technical capabilities and competitiveness of the European satellite industry, as well as developing European capabilities for independently launching and operating space missions;
Space exploration and science projects that aim to increase the benefits of European flagship missions and infrastructures. In particular, this will be done by exploiting space science data and by conducting experiments that could lead to scientific and technological breakthroughs;
International cooperation projects that aim to develop partnerships with countries outside Europe;
Outreach and communication that highlight the importance of space in the lives of Europeans.
Cross-cutting aspects Research and innovation are intertwined in Horizon 2020, with innovation being prevalent in the development of key enabling technologies for industrial leadership and for close-to-market space applications of Galileo and Copernicus. Horizon 2020 also aims to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), especially those not traditionally involved in space, to engage them in space research and technology development.
