The main objectives:
Fundamental and applied research in information technology, computer science, applied mathematics, computer aided design and other related fields
• Cooperation with industrial and scientific research centers in solving technical problems in computer aided engineering, new products testing, software and hardware development
• Scientific support of information processes in Belarus
• Prognosing the main directions of information technology applications in various fields of industry and science, specialists education and training high-qualified staff

The institute is the leading organization in the State Scientific and Fundamental Research program «Infotex», State Scientific and Technical Program «Advanced information and telecommunication technologies», joint Belarusian-Russian programs «Supercomputer» («SKIF», «SKIF-GRID», «SKIF-TRIADA»), «Cosmos-NT», State Scientific Program «Computer technology design and new production manufacturing» of the Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Belarus.
Starting from the 1965 the training of high level specialists on informatics technologies has been carried out as post graduating courses for PhD degree and starting from the 1988 –for DSc degree. The specialized Council of PhD and DSc degree is authorized to consider and confirm the thesis of candidates.
The institute also provides training for industrial workers.
