Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Engineering at Bilkent University in Ankara (Turkey) Dr. Çiğdem Gündüz Demir visits the UIIP NASB on May 29.

Dr. Çiğdem Gündüz Demir will meet with the Director General of the Institute Alexander Tuzikov and the Head of the Laboratory for Biomedical Images Analysis Vasily Kovalev. They will discuss issues of bilateral scientific and technical cooperation. Dr. Çiğdem Gündüz Demir will also visit scientific laboratories.

Dr. Çiğdem Gündüz Demir is an Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Engineering at Bilkent University. I received my B.S. and M.S. degrees in computer engineering from Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey, in 1999 and 2001, respectively, and my Ph.D. degree in computer science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York, in 2005. I was visiting Stanford University in Spring 2013 and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, in Fall 2009. I am a member of the professional societies of IEEE and ISCB, and a member of the alumni of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Bogazici University, and Ankara Science High School.

Her main research interests and projects include development of new bio-computational models and application of pattern recognition and computer vision algorithms for medical image analysis.

In her research group at Bilkent, they have focused on the microscopic analysis of histopathological images at the tissue level and in vitro fluorescence and live cell images at the cellular level. They have also been working on the analysis of in vivo CT and MR images. Research topics include:

  • Image segmentation
  • Image representation and feature extraction
  • Image quantification
  • Classification
  • Content-based image retrieval
  • Graph algorithms
  • Machine learning algorithms
